Holiday road death toll climbs

WITH the festive season fast approaching, the number of car accidents seems to have picked up on the country's roads.

Police on Wednesday reported six deaths in separate road accidents over the past week.

* On Wednesday evening, 17-year-old Tiaan Damon died in Windhoek after appa­rently losing control of the car he was driving.

Two passengers were slightly injured.

* On Tuesday, 69-year-old Mariana Kruger died after the driver of a car she was travelling in lost control and the car overturned on the road between Windhoek and Okahandja.

* Police at Oshivelo in the Oshikoto Region reported the death of one man in an accident which took place on the road between Tsumeb and Oshivelo on Saturday.

The accident happened when the left rear tyre of a minibus burst, causing the driver to lose control and overturn it.

Police say they've been unable to identify the deceased, as he was not carrying any identity documents.

* A 49-year-old man was run over by a bakkie early on Sunday morning, after he had apparently been lying in the road.

The incident took place at Emanya village in the Oshikoto Region.

The deceased was identified as 49-year-old Nghiilwapo Shange.

Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide against the driver of the bakkie.

* In the Kavango Region, Valentinus Mashambo died after he lost control of a car at Nyondo village.

He did not have a driver's licence.

* A double-cab bakkie overturned on the road between Rundu and Divundu early on Monday morning, killing its driver and sole occupant, identified by the Police as 40-year-old Hennie Muller.

* In Ohangwena, 25-year-old Isack Sheetekela died instantly when the driver of the car he had been travelling in lost control of the vehicle on the Omafo road late last Monday.
