City Police intensifies foot patrols

WINDHOEK - Windhoek's City Police will deploy an additional 144 new members during this festive season to monitor crimes and violence in the city.

Chief of the City Police, Abraham Kanime, said on Friday that foot patrols will be part of the City Police's crime prevention strategy during the festive season to intensify the combating of crimes and other law enforcement activities.

"They will patrol most identified areas in places like shopping centres, central business districts and neighbourhoods," said the Chief of City Police.

The new Police members are expected to monitor the street as of today.

According to Kanime, foot patrolling is aimed at enhancing and establishing contact with the communities, to hear their concerns as well as identify and tackle problems with urgency.

Since patrolling in uniform is not effective enough and often visible to criminals, Kanime said the patrols will be complemented by plainclothes Police who will do surveillance work to assist uniformed members.

Although Kanime could not disclose the number of crimes reported so far this festive season, he said it is a tradition for crimes and violence to occur during festive seasons.
