Are We Really Democratic?

ALLOW me space in your newspaper to express my opinion on the issue of Nanu, Napwu and the Health Permanent Secretary.

I think it is not fair at all in an independent Namibia that people are not free to express their opinions and feelings about issues of concern in a democratic manner.

If they do so, they can be threatened, intimidated and harassed emotionally if not physically.

Is Namibia really a democratic country? I'm a person who always interested to know what is going on in my own country since independence.

I have seen that in most cases, our leaders do not practice what they preach, or what is in their manifestos.

If you say something is wrong, even at your workplace, then you are against Swapo.

It does not matter whether you are a Swapo member or not, you are just against the government.

Everything which is done by the Swapo Government, whether right or wrong, must be supported! Is that democracy? I m a nurse by profession, and know very well why Nanu was formed.

It was formed by nurses who saw that their colleagues in Namiba were not well represented by Napwu as a trade union, and they wanted to have their own union which is run and led by health professionals themselves.

There was nothing political in its formation.

People we should not try to hide the truth.

If nurses feel that they are not well treated when comes to overtime payment, they have a constitutional right to say so without being threatened.

Napwu is a member of NUNW which is af?liated to Swapo, and Swapo is a political party.

Nanu does not and will not af?liate to any political party, but is there to represent the pride of all nurses irrespective of their political af?liation.

The PS of MOHSS has been there for many years now, but has not done anything good for nurses or Ministry of Health and Social Services which is visible up to now.

The way the PS addresses his subordinates is not always professional.

It is high time for him to realise that he should give a chance to others who can do better than himself.

I want to thank the current Namibian President H Pohamba for his good governance and the fact that he is really trying to unite the Namibian people, especially in Swapo.

The government must work in the interests of all Namibians, and not for Swapo members only.

T.S Oranjemund
