Friday, December 1, 2006 - Web posted at 8:25:00 GMT On Unruly Opposition I WISH to air my views about what is going in the first chamber of our bicameral parliamentary system (the legislature), known as the National Assembly. |
|
As a political studies student, I constantly follow political affairs. I have noticed immaturity in our opposition parties during the National Assembly proceedings. Whenever the Speaker of the National Assembly, Theo-Ben Gurirab, is absent and the Deputy Speaker is in charge, the opposition tends to misbehave. They talk without being given a chance to do so, just like high-school teenagers. Besides that they request points of order but when given a chance they make funny remarks, comments and jokes. One now wonders why they are behaving like this. It makes me wonder whether they are really leaders of the nation! Their pathetic behaviour was proven when they recently walked out of Parliament while the House was still in session (Tuesday, 14 November 2006). What kind of a leader does this? A real leader stands up against the obstacles and finds a way to deal with problems; a real leader does not run away from problems to go hide his face like the opposition did on Tuesday, November 14 2006. A French philosopher named Montesquieu introduced a pluralistic political system (trias politica) which is the separation of political power into the three branches of the state, namely the executive, judiciary and the legislature - the system that Namibia has adopted. He defined the three branches as the top ones in the state. The legislature is one of the three and when we are experiencing problems with the opposition leaders it means that there are holes in the roof. I thought the duty of the opposition is to see to it that the government does the right thing. How can one fulfil this obligation when you are running away? As loyal and concerned citizen and in accordance with Article 95, which advocates citizen participation in government affairs, I strongly feel that the opposition behaviour is unreasonable. If you don't want to be in Parliament or are perhaps tired of your duties, please just leave for good because it appears that you don't have any aims and ambitions for our beloved motherland.
