2 more die on Kalkrand highway

STAFF REPORTER

THE national road between Kalkrand and Rehoboth claimed two more lives this past weekend, while the bodies of two people who died on this same road less than a month ago were involved in a second accident there on their way to be buried.

In the first incident, a VW Jetta burst into flames after colliding with a VW Polo.

Both the occupants of the Jetta died.

By yesterday afternoon, Police had only released the name of one of the deceased, Keith Harty.

The two occupants of the Polo sustained only minor injuries.

Less than half an hour later, a bakkie carrying two bodies from Mariental to a funeral at Kalkrand suffered a tyre burst.

It overturned and the two bodies being transported on the back were thrown out of their caskets and onto the road.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Stephan Nuuyi said the bodies were returned to the mortuary to be taken care of.

The burial has been postponed.

The passengers in the vehicle were not injured.

Less than a month ago, 12 people, including the two bodies in this latest incident, died about 30 km outside of Kalkrand.

Three vehicles were involved in that accident, in which 10 people died.
