Ndemwiimba was crowned during the Mahangu Champion awards ceremony, which took place at the Ongwediva Annual Trade Fair on Tuesday evening.

As the overall winner, Ndemwiimba was crowned together with five other crop farmers from the Caprivi, Kavango, Ohangwena, Oshana and Omusati regions.

In a speech delivered by Deputy Permanent Secretary, Anna Shiweda, Agriculture, Water and Forestry Minister Dr Nickey Iyambo said the six farmers were honoured for setting an example by working hard and applying new technology to produce traditional crops.

"In instigating these annual award ceremonies like this one, we are at long last sending a message to Namibia's farmers that their hard work and application is appreciated, and that they are making a significant contribution to the development of the nation," Iyambo stated.

The Minister said the awards were proof of farmers' willingness to contribute to mahangu production, processing, procurement as part of Vision 2030.

As the overall winner, Ndemwiimba received various prizes such as a floating trophy, a certificate of recognition, N$1 000, a plastic mahangu silo, a cultivator and a 50-kg bag of seed.

Letta Seblon from the Omusati Region was awarded N$800 as the champion in Conservation Tillage.

The other regional winners were John Mwazumo (Caprivi), Johannes Kavange (Kavango), Lazarus Mutileni (Ohangwena), Soini Nghilinganye (Omusati) and Claudia Naftali (Oshana).
