Five die in Gobabis accident

STAFF REPORTER

AN entire family was wiped out instantaneously in a road accident close to Gobabis early on Monday night.

Five people were killed in the accident, which the Police attributed to a burst tyre.

Stephanus Humbu, travelling with his wife, two children and another person, had been driving along the main road between Gobabis and the Trans-Kalahari Highway in a Toyota bakkie when a Nissan bakkie approached from the opposite side, pulling a trailer carrying 72 goats.

As the vehicles approached one another, the left rear tyre of the Nissan is said to have burst, causing the vehicle to violently sway into the opposite lane and crash into the oncoming Toyota.

The Toyota apparently caught fire, Police reported yesterday.

All its occupants were burnt beyond recognition.

The deceased, all from the Toyota bakkie, were identified as Stephanus Humbu (53), Batseba Humbu (40), Mukona Humbu (4), Mbaunguraye Humbu (5), and Kakazona Katjizemine (7).

The five occupants of the Nissan survived the incident with only minor injuries.

The goats were also unharmed.

The Gobabis Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
