Shack fire leaves families homeless

LUQMAN CLOETE at KEETMANSHOOP

EIGHT families were left homeless after a fire destroyed shacks in the Benguela location at Luederitz on Monday afternoon.

Town Council spokesman Shali Akwaanyenga says the fire was apparently started by a leaking gas stove.

He said no injuries were reported.

People left homeless by the blaze have been taken in by relatives, and have asked the Council to provide them with blankets, food and building materials to rebuild their homes.

Akwaanyenga said the Council would discuss their plight at its next meeting.

Municipal workers have already cleaned up the area devastated by the fire.
