Kapia missing in action at NA

* LINDSAY DENTLINGER

AFTER creating a stir when he arrived for the start of a new Parliamentary session last week, suspended Swapo Youth leader Paulus Kapia was not present when the National Assembly resumed yesterday.

The Swapo Politburo announced three weeks ago that the axed former Deputy Minister of Works would not be returning to the National Assembly.

Approached by The Namibian, an irate Kapia said the reason for his absence was because he was out of town.

"You people of the newspapers must stop asking about my life," he snapped.

He said there was nothing untoward about his absence from the House yesterday.

Asked whether he would return next week he replied, "yes".

On Monday, he appeared in the High Court in Windhoek to divorce his wife of 11 years.

Last week, Kapia attended an induction course for parliamentarians, creating the impression that he had no immediate plans to give up his seat.

Swapo has announced publicly that it does not want Kapia to retain his position as MP, it has said it will have to expel him from the party if he does not resign.

Swapo Secretary General Ngarikutuke Tjiriange's cellphone was off when The Namibian tried to contact him yesterday.

The party's spokesperson, Minister of Information and Broadcasting Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, said as far as she had been informed, the party's decision of three weeks ago still stood.

The National Assembly had by yesterday not received a letter of resignation from Kapia.
