It's back to business at Nam resorts

IT'S business as usual at Namibia Wildlife Resorts after striking employees received their salaries late on Monday.

Workers at NWR resorts countrywide laid down tools after the company failed to pay their salaries on Friday.

They said it was the second time this had happened.

According to employees at the different resorts, the strike did not severely affect visitors.

At Daan Viljoen, only six visitors booked in on Monday, while staff of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism took responsibility for day visitors.

"We work together with the Ministry," said one employee, "and they do the administration for day visitors."

Staff also didn't refuse to help visitors during the strike.

"Visitors are innocent," said a Waterberg employee, "we served them and they were happy."

The strike at Namutoni in the Etosha National Park only lasted for about half an hour, while workers at the Ai-Ais resort did not participate in the strike.

Workers there had not been able to communicate with their counterparts in other parts of the country.

According to Cleopas Andreas, spokesperson for the Daan Viljoen shop stewards, workers were still unhappy with management, despite having received their salaries.

"What we ask is that, if possible, the Ministry should investigate the NWR.

Why is there no money? They don't buy new equipment, and they don't pay the workers, so where does the money go?" Others at the resort complained of a lack of communication between management and employees, no opportunities for promotion for most employees, and a lack of training for staff.

Workers said if their overtime payments were not paid by Friday, they might take similar action again.

"Some of us really depend on that overtime money, as we don't get a lot," said a worker at Ai-Ais.

NWR Public Relations Officer Pieter Mietzner declined to comment on whether management had addressed employees officially yet, saying only that the NWR might issue a statement to the media later.
