Nujoma's chopper trip questioned

LEADER of the opposition Ben Ulenga has demanded answers from Government for allegedly allowing former President Sam Nujoma to use a State helicopter to travel to Gobabis for party purposes.

Speaking in the National Assembly yesterday, the Congress of Democrats (CoD) president said that the arrangement appeared to be irregular and possibly tantamount to corruption.

It is reported that Nujoma flew to Gobabis on the weekend of September 16 for a Swapo rally with one of the State's helicopters.

During his visit he also distributed goods on behalf of the Sam Nujoma Foundation, dressed in party colours, according to Ulenga.

Ulenga said it was unacceptable that Government resources were being used for party-political purposes and demanded to know whether the trip was made at the expense of the taxpayer.

He also further questioned Prime Minister Nahas Angula's role in the Sam Nujoma Foundation and whether the organisation was non-partisan and non-political.

Ulenga said he was concerned whether party affiliation affected who could become beneficiaries of the organisation's charity.

Angula is expected to reply in the National Assembly next Thursday.
