City rethinks billboards

* STAFF REPORTER

THE City of Windhoek has suspended the processing of applications for permanent and semi-permanent advertising billboards for six months.

With regard to other advertisements such as banners, posters, leaflets, auctioneers' and estate agents' notices, the Council said applications would be approved be on a monthly basis until the ban is lifted.

During this period, the City Council will reassess its pricing structure for outdoor advertisements on municipal, Government and private land.

Wednesday's City Council meeting heard that the municipality was losing revenue because its advertising tariffs were too low.

The current municipal fees vary from as low as N$50 to N$1 000, depending on the type and nature of the advertisement.

Private land owners, on the other hand, receive between N$500 and N$3 000 per billboard, the Council says.

The City says it also does not have enough personnel to control illegal outdoor advertising.
