City of Windhoek shakes hands with Johannesburg

THE Mayor of Windhoek, Matheus Shikongo, has emphasised the need for south-south co-operation as a tool for capacity building.

Speaking at the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the cities of Windhoek and Johannesburg, Shikongo emphasised the need for networking between local authorities in the region, saying information sharing was a basis for capacity building.

He said local authorities in post-independent Africa faced numerous challenges, mainly emanating from the colonial past.

As such, he added, there was need for a concerted effort geared at improving the standard of living of the poor.

"The challenges facing us in our respective local authorities in a post-apartheid and new political and democratic dispensation demand from us a concerted effort, determination, unity and strategic approach in order to overcome a common challenging legacy," said Shikongo.

The Windhoek Mayor highlighted that economic empowerment, poverty reduction, the devastating HIV-AIDS pandemic and capacity building remained challenges that needed immediate attention.

"This is a common struggle facing us all to improve the quality of lives of all our people at all levels," Shikongo said.

"It is therefore not surprising that as political leadership of democratically elected local authorities, we need to enhance the south-south co-operation as an effective tool through which capacity building, effective exchange of information, resource sharing, experience and expertise can be realised."

Among other things, the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) provides for information exchange, networking and co-operation between Windhoek and Johannesburg.
