Thursday, September 29, 2005 - Web posted at 8:15:39 GMT Co-operative gets off ground *LUQMAN CLOETE at KLEIN-KARASA COLLECTIVE effort, combined with resources, is needed to successfully ward off the twin evils of hunger and poverty. |

This was said by the Minister of Environment and Tourism, Willem Konjore, at the official handover yesterday of the Klein Karas Co-operative registration certificate. "Remember many hands make things right," Konjore said. Located some 200 kilometres south-west of Keetmanshoop, the Klein-Karas Co-operative will focus mainly on co-operative farming. The Ministry of Lands and Resettlement has reserved a 7 000 hectare farm, Klein Karas 105, to resettle the co-operative members. The former Deputy Speaker of Parliament urged members of the emerging co-operative to create an economic relationship that should not depend on age, gender, traditional status or political affiliation but on equality. He warned members to guard against corrupt individuals and any form of corrupt practices. "Members joining the co-operative with self-enrichment agendas are uncalled for," Konjore said. He noted the tourism development potential of the co-operative and appealed to private institutions to join hands in the spirit of partnership. "Let's share the skills and resources we have, but guard against exploitation," Konjore said. He also expressed concern over the visible lack of participation by Karas inhabitants in the tourism industry. Speaking at the same event, the Managing Director of Gondwana Canon Park, Manfred Goldbeck, said that to accomplish success in any business, political support as well as unity among the community was needed. He expressed his willingness to offer his expertise in developing tourism in the area. The Namibia Nature Foundation (NNF) pledged N$2 000, while the Canyon Lodge pledged two pigs to the co-operative. |
