Govt says Nujoma paid for helicopter trip

THE Ministry of Works, Transport and Communication yesterday said that the Office of former President Sam Nujoma had paid to use a State helicopter to fly to Omaheke two weeks ago where he addressed a Swapo rally and represented the Sam Nujoma Foundation.

A copy of a quotation for the Augusta Bell 139 helicopter for the flight from Eros Airport to Gobabis, Otjombinde, Epukiro, Otjinene and back to Windhoek for N$27 697 was faxed by the Ministry to The Namibian yesterday.

This follows a report in the Windhoek Observer last week, which alluded that the trip might have been made at no cost to Nujoma.

On Tuesday, Congress of Democrats leader Ben Ulenga fired questions at Prime Minister Nahas Angula in the National Assembly regarding the trip, and the work of the Sam Nujoma Foundation.

Angula is only expected to reply to these next week.

In yesterday's statement, Permanent Secretary of Works Shihaleni Ndjaba said Government aircraft may be utilised by all Namibians provided they are prepared to pay for the costs involved.

A Cabinet decision taken last month directs the Works Ministry to "promote" and "advertise" the Government fleet for private sector usage.

"Any individual or institution wishing to make use of any Government aircraft can do so provided they pay the set charges for the utilisation of such aircraft," said the statement.

"The Office of the Founding President pays for air transportation services ...

rendered to the Founding President Dr Sam Nujoma".
