In an interview with Nampa, the Governor indicated that the food was meant for school feeding programmes at certain schools in the Mukwe Constituency and was only to be stored at Max Makushe Secondary School.

He added that a local company responsible for the distributing of the food to needy pupils stored the food at Max Makushe Hostel earlier this year.

According to Thighuru, an employee at Max Makushe said that the maize meal were stored there during March and April.

"I was there myself, the food is no longer suitable for human consumption," Thighuru said.

He said the information reached him after some Government officials tipped him off on Wednesday morning and he went to see for himself.

The Governor said he saw about 500 bags of maize meal inside the storeroom, while other food items might also have been stored.

He said he had tried his level best to reach the employee of the company responsible for the school feeding programme.

Although, Thighuru could not disclose the names of either the company or the employee, he assured the media that the necessary steps would be taken to ensure that such negligence would never occur again.

Meanwhile, at Katima Mulilo in the Caprivi Region at least five people are facing charges of misconduct for allowing 230 tonnes of drought relief aid to rot in a warehouse at the M'pacha Military Base.
