A POLICE officer faces charges in connection with the death of a woman at Keetmanshoop.

Elizabeth Smith, the wife of a school principal at the town, died in a Windhoek hospital last Monday after being hit by a car.

Sergeant Hendrik Jobs of the Police was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol, or alternatively reckless and negligent driving.

He was released on bail of N$300.

Regional Police commander Nicky Nampala told The Namibian that the charge would be changed to culpable homicide.

Med-Rescue flew Smith from Keetmanshoop to Windhoek, where she was admitted to the Central Hospital.

Smith's sister, Fransie De Koe, said doctors declared Smith brain-dead, but she was kept on a life-support system until Monday morning.

Smith, an employee of First National Bank at Keetmanshoop, was taking her habitual afternoon walk with a friend on Saturday when she was hit by the vehicle.
