Camm's dismissal from Telecom upheld

JAMES Camm, former General Manager of Consumer Services of Telecom Namibia, has left the company for good after his appeal against his dismissal was turned down.

The acting head of corporate communications at Telecom, Oiva Angula, confirmed that Camm's appeal was heard on September 6 and the outcome confirmed his dismissal of April 12 this year.

He was found guilty of involvement in a web of suspected scams said to have cost the parastatal millions of dollars.

Camm had previously denied any charges of fraud against him.

Earlier, Telecom Managing Director Frans Ndoroma said Camm's dismissal followed several investigations which led to a disciplinary hearing.

Sources said an "intricate net" of people are alleged to have defrauded Telecom through tenders.

Insiders said the cases took place over several years.

Camm was arrested on June 10 and, together with businessman Heinz Dresselhaus, face 30 charges of fraud, theft and corruption.

They remain free on bail of N$20 000.

They will join a business partner of Dresselhaus, Etienne Weakley, in the dock on October 17.

The host of criminal charges that are pending against Dresselhaus, Weakley and Camm represent a second leg of legal steps that Telecom has taken in connection with the alleged scam.

The parastatal also sued Dresselhaus Scrap CC for N$3,49 million in a civil case that the scrap-metal dealership settled in mid-July by agreeing to pay Telecom N$2,4 million.
