Sunken cargo ship being salvaged

*ELMA ROBBERTS

THE cargo ship Umfolozi, which sank in the Walvis Bay harbour on September 17, is being refloated but will most likely be scrapped since it is too old for further use.

The Umfolozi was built in 1982.

According to the Operations Manager of the Dutch company Smit Salvage, Peter Sinke, it took some time to start with the salvaging operation because divers had to assess the damage first before an action plan could be drawn up.

After the cargo on board was removed, 29 containers were placed back on the ship to stabilise it.

Water will now be pumped out of the ship while it is brought to the surface slowly to prevent it from capsizing.

Sinke says the whole process will be completed by Wednesday next week.
