Sam Hamupolo, Secretary of the local branch of the Namibia Public Workers Union (Napwu), presented a petition to the Acting Chief Executive Officer, Shali Akwaanyinga, during the lunch hour.

The petition demanded a negotiable five per cent salary raise for all council employees.

It also demanded that the council stop delaying annual salary increases.

In addition, the petition protested the exclusion of top managers from the bargaining unit.

Napwu has already lodged a salary dispute with the office of the Labour Commissioner.

The Luederitz Town Council budgeted an amount of N$304 714 for salary increases.

This amounts to an average 3,5 per cent salary increment.

Top managers excluded themselves from the bargaining unit and set aside N$24 637 of the N$ 304 717 for their own salary increments.

Akwaanyinga said the council would respond to the workers' petition after the salary issue was discussed during the upcoming council meeting.

The council convenes once a month.
