2nd round of rabies vaccinations

* TANJA BAUSE

RESIDENTS in Windhoek who did not get their pets vaccinated against rabies last week will get another chance this week.

The City of Windhoek has announced a second round of free rabies vaccinations, starting today.

According to the municipality, last week's vaccination campaign was a huge success.

Pet owners turned up in their thousands and the 10 000 units of vaccine made available by the State Veterinary Service ran out rapidly.

Another 10 000 units have been ordered for this week's campaign.

Because of a shortage of manpower, there will not be as many vaccination points this week.

The municipality has once again appealed to dog owners to keep their pets in their yards.

In a press release issued last week, the municipality warned that stray dogs would be rounded up and put down by the City Police.

However, City spokesman Marx Hipandwa has toned down that statement by saying that dogs found in the street without licence tags would first be taken to the SPCA, where their owners would still be able to reclaim them.
