Mealie beer for the poor in Japan

TOKYO - A major Japanese beverage maker says it has made a drink that tastes strikingly like beer out of maize, aiming for budget-conscious brew guzzlers looking to take advantage of lower taxes.

Suntory Ltd said it would release next month a new beer-like drink called Kireaji-Nama, which translates as "fresh and crispy."

Low-malt liquor has gradually been cutting into the beer market in Japan because it is taxed less than beer.

But shipments of low-malt liquor began to drop last year when the government tried to close the gap and raised the tax.

Brewers responded by developing so-called "third-sector" products, such as beer-like drinks made of beans.

"By using maize as the main ingredient we realised a dry taste," Suntory said in a statement.

The maize drink is likely to sell for more than 10 per cent less than low-malt liquor, which itself is already nearly half the price of beer.
