RP reinstates Carola

CHRISTOF MALETSKY

THE Republican Party (RP) has lifted the temporary suspension of its Secretary General, Carola Engelbrecht.

RP Chairman Daan Holtzhausen announced at the weekend that the hardworking Engelbrecht was reinstated in her position after she apologised at a disciplinary hearing.

She was suspended from her duties for alleged "party disciplinary reasons".

The party did not elaborate.

Holtzhausen, who chaired the disciplinary hearing, said Engelbrecht apologised to RP President Henk Mudge and the leadership, and the apology was accepted.

Earlier, RP Chief Executive Officer Jackie Visagie had said that Engelbrecht did not stand to lose her position and that it was merely a case of ironing out matters of alleged "party discipline" before she resumed the position.

It was not the first time the party has attempted to rein in the energetic Engelbrecht - shortly before last year's elections, the party also "suspended" her position and prohibited her from speaking to the media.

At the time, Mudge said it was only because of a misunderstanding.

Visagie said Engelbrecht's suspension was the result of a decision taken last year at a management committee meeting, at which she was not present.
