Swimming pool days almost here again

WINDHOEK'S new Olympic-size and recreational swimming pools will be completed by the end of next month.

The City of Windhoek said last week that the early start of the rains late last year stalled the tiling of the two pools at the new complex in the southern suburb of Olympia.

Tiling is the last major construction task to be carried out.

The pools replace the old Jan Jonker swimming pool, next to Maerua Mall, which has given way to a new shopping mall construction, after more than 40 years of wear and tear made it unsustainable to maintain.

Once opened, fees for both the Western Suburbs and Olympia swimming pools will be on par.

People older than 18 will pay N$5 entrance fee, children of school-going age N$3 and children over the age of two, N$2.

Pensioners will be charged N$3.

These tariffs will be the same on weekdays, weekends and public holidays.

The city has introduced several incentive measures such as season tickets, to encourage more frequent use of Windhoek's swimming facilities.

School pupils can buy a school season ticket for N$10, for admission to the pool on weekdays during term time.

Schools will pay N$300 a month irrespective of the number of pupils, for the use of the pool.

A swim season (September to April) ticket for frequent swimmers will cost N$200.

Swimming tariffs have remained constant for the last four years.

Last year the city earned around N$32 000 in revenue from its swimming facilities, up from around N$20 000 in 2003.

The new swimming complex, which is being built at a cost of around N$7 million, also boasts two clubhouses and a kiosk.
