Duo in court over death of city policeman

LINDSAY DENTLINGER and WERNER MENGES

TWO young men, aged 18 and 20, appeared in the Windhoek Magistrate's Court yesterday in connection with the alleged murder of a former Policeman who was found dead by his wife in their home in Windhoek late on Sunday night.

The Police have reported that former policeman Anton Matesu (39) was found by his wife in their home in Acacia Park in the capital with his hands and feet bound, and his mouth stuffed with a gag.

Matesu was employed with the Municipality's City Police at the time of his death.

He resigned from the Namibian Police in 1996.

Yesterday, Steven Goagoseb (20) and Michael Williams (18), appeared before Magistrate Sarel Jacobs on charges of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances in connection with Matesu's death.

Their case was postponed to March 24 for further investigation.

Both young suspects were remanded in custody.

Police Spokesperson Warrant Officer James Matengu this week denied reports by residents of the Acacia Park housing complex that Matesu had been shot or stabbed.

Matengu said no wounds were found on Matesu's body.

Residents of the area reported that people had been socialising at the house since early in the day of Matesu's death and suggested that he might have been murdered by one of his guests.

Matengu said there was no evidence at this stage to prove such reports and that it was unclear at this stage whether the the two held for Matesu's murder were indeed his friends.

He added yesterday that a large array of items that the suspects are accused of having stolen from Matesu have since been recovered.

These include a Volkswagen Caddy bakkie, a computer, a printer, two television sets, a gold watch that belonged to Matesu, a home theatre system, kitchen equipment, shoes, bank cards and Matesu's identity document.
