Escaped elephant killed in Oshikoto

OSWALD SHIVUTE at OSHAKATI

NATURE Conservation officers have shot dead an elephant bull that escaped from the Etosha National Park and caused problems for villagers in the Oshikoto Region.

Oshikoto Governor Penda Ndakolo told The Namibian that the elephant caused havoc in the villages of Ekulo and Onakankuzi, chasing children on their way to school.

By the time conservation officers arrived on the scene, the elephant was enraged and apparently tried to attack them as well.

They shot the animal and the meat was distributed among the villagers.

Earlier this year, lions that had escaped from the Etosha Park were reportedly killing cattle in the same area.

Governor Ndakolo said Nature Conservation officers have succeeded in driving the lions back to the park.
