Wednesday, January 26, 2005 - Web posted at 7:13:34 GMT New centre for AIDS orphans ENDOLA - The Ohangwena Region is one of the country's poorest regions, characterised by insufficient access to basic facilities such as water, sanitation, health services, education and job opportunities. |
|
The Director of Planning for the Ohangwena Region, Daniel Kashikola, said this when he inaugurated an project for orphans, called Farmer Field and Life School (FFLS), in the Endola constituency at the weekend. Kashikola believes the lack of access to basic facilities has a negative impact on the food security and nutrition of the majority of the people in the northern region, especially orphaned children and female-headed households. HIV-AIDS is also causing economic hardship in the region. He attributed this in part to the death of productive members of society, as well as the increasing number of orphans and vulnerable children. "This state of affairs subjects them to untold suffering manifested in poverty, food insecurity and poor nutritional state," Kashikola said. He said the challenge now was how to help the orphans and female-headed households to achieve some measure of year-round food security and household income. Kashikola stated that all citizens needed to rededicate themselves, not only to improving the well-being of orphans and other vulnerable children, but also to the fight against HIV-AIDS. According to the Director of Planning, the FFLS was designed not only to cater for children orphaned by AIDS and vulnerable children, but also for poor households affected by HIV-AIDS. The project will teach about 30 orphans how to grow crops. They will undergo training for two hours every day after school. The Embassy of Finland sponsored the project to the tune of more than N$600 000, said project co-ordinator Imms Namaseb. - Nampa |
