Unam gets tough with defaulters

CHRISTOF MALETSKY

THE University of Namibia barred 730 students from writing last year's final exams after they failed to settle their debt.

Unam's Director of Communications and Marketing, Edwin Tjiramba, says they have recovered more than 90 per cent of the money owed by students for tuition and accommodation costs last year.

At one stage, the outstanding fees owed by about 1 700 students amounted to N$10 million.

In the past Unam has been lenient in barring students from exam halls.

At the end of last week the debt stood at N$2 million and Tjiramba urged students who were unable to pay their fees last year to do so before they register for re-admission.

Tjiramba said over 2 000 students had been provisionally admitted.

The figure excludes those who will be admitted through Unam's Centre for External Studies.
