Northern schools full, hundreds still stranded

OSWALD SHIVUTE at OSHAKATI

CLOSE to 500 pupils in the Ohangwena and Oshikoto regions still have not found placement for Grade 11.

The senior advisory teacher for the two regions, Nghihalwa Amoomo, told The Namibian that she doubted whether the 487 pupils could be enrolled at any schools in the North, since all four northern education regions are already full.

She said education officials were doing all they can to place the children, but they might have to go to school elsewhere in the country.

"We are going to find schools for these fulltime learners first, before we consider Namcol learners, who will surely raise the number of learners looking for Grade 11 [placement] even more."

The Namibian has learnt that serious problems are also being experienced with the placement of first-graders in the North, especially in Oshakati.

Both Directors of Education in the North, other senior education officials and circuit inspectors were meeting throughout yesterday to address the issue.
