Cancer Association keeps flame of hope burning

TANJA BAUSE

THE Cancer Association spent more than N$760 000 between March and December last year in its fight against cancer.

The money was mainly used to help cancer sufferers from across the country.

Cancer sufferers who need treatment in Windhoek are accommodated at House Acacia, the running costs of which are also paid for by CAN.

To be able to help people, the Association relies on donations from the public, businesses and other institutions.

Some of CAN's well-known initiatives are the Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project, which runs from April 11 to 15, the Bokomo Pan Cake Day on April 29, the First National Bank Carnation Day on July 20 and the MTC Cup for Cancer in September and October.

October is Breast Cancer Month. Breast cancer is the cancer that kills and affects most women.

CAN tries to counsel every single mastectomy patient before the operation, and to provide moral support and other support afterwards.

Street collections will be held at major shopping centres in Windhoek on March 5, June 25 and September 24.

Last year, N$15 000 was raised in each street collection.

This year, CAN is looking for volunteers who would like to give up a morning and help in the fight against cancer.

Global statistics show that cancer is on the increase, with one out of every three people having some type of cancer compared to 20 years ago, when one in every five people had cancer.

The cure rate has increased: 64 per cent of people are being cured compared to 24 per cent 20 years ago.

The increase of cancer worldwide can be attributed to stress, unhealthy eating habits, general lifestyle and dress code.

Nowadays people expose a lot of their skin to the sun and do not wear sunblock or a hat.
