Young mother arrested for baby dumping

MAGGI BARNARD

A 23-year-old woman was arrested at Walvis Bay on Tuesday for allgedly abandoning her newborn baby three days earlier.

The baby boy was found on Friday afternoon on the second floor of the Pescanova House, wrapped in a towel inside a plastic bag.

The baby was still alive and was immediately taken to the Welwitschia Hospital, from where he was transferred to the State Hospital in Windhoek.

The Police at Walvis Bay said the baby was in a stable condition and was receiving treatment for jaundice.

When the baby was found, his umbilical cord had apparently not been tied off and he was bleeding.

The mother was admitted to hospital after her arrest for a standard after-birth examination.

The Police could not say when she would appear in court.

The charge being investigated against her is for abandoning her child, which is child neglect, as stipulated in the Children's Act.

A social worker would have to decide on the future of the child - whether he will be given up for adoption, whether the grandparents will adopt him or whether the mother will be declared fit to look after him.

The Namibian has learned that the mother allegedly admitted to dumping her baby out of fear for her father.

She apparently managed to hide her pregnancy from her family and friends.
