Friday, February 25, 2005 - Web posted at 8:18:22 GMT Dramatic shoot-out on city highway TANJA BAUSEA SHOOT-OUT between the Police and suspected armed robbers on Windhoek's Western Bypass on Wednesday night resulted in the death of one of the suspects. |
|
Five others were wounded. The shoot-out followed a Police operation which foiled an armed robbery after the Police received a tip-off from the public that the Supermarket in Rocky Crest was going to be robbed. Police officers, posing as workers, had staked out the shop for a couple of days. Just before 22h00 on Wednesday, the robbers entered the Supermarket but there were still customers in the shop and they left. The officers decided to follow the suspects rather than confront them in the Supermarket, fearing that the suspects might open fire on the customers and workers. The suspects, who were driving a car without number plates, noticed the Police following them and opened fire on the Police with an R-5 assault rifle. After a chase down the Western Bypass, the Police were able to block the road and force the suspects to a halt. The suspected robbers again opened fire on the Police, who fired back. One suspect was killed and the other five were wounded. No Police officers or passers-by were hurt. One of the suspects fled into the bushes and was followed by the Police. He was captured after a short pursuit on foot. The Police recovered the R-5 rifle and four pistols on the scene. After the suspects were taken to hospital, the Police raided their homes, recovering various stolen goods including televisions and sound systems. The six are believed to have been responsible for a number of break-ins in the Rocky Crest-Dorado Park area. Two of the suspects are well known to the Police and could be connected to various other robberies. "This was a well-planned operation and we are extremely glad that no one from the public or the Police got hurt" said Commissioner Des Shilunga. The suspects will be charged with attempted armed robbery, unlawful possession of firearms and resisting lawful arrest. The deceased has been identified as Michael Haihambo (34). |
