Monday, February 28, 2005 - Web posted at 10:49:03 GMT Governor urges good governance GOBABIS - Good governance assumes that corruption is minimised, the views of the minority are taken into account and that the voices of the most vulnerable in society are heard in decision-making, says Omaheke Regional Governor Laura McLeod. |
|
McLeod made these remarks at the first regional council meeting of the year held last week. She appealed to the Regional Development Co-ordinating Committee, Constituency Development Committee and Village Development Committee to be pro-active. McLeod said good governance was also responsive to the present and future needs of society. "We all know thaat major donors and international financial institutions are increasingly basing their aid and loans on reforms and good governance," she said. McLeod urged her fellow councillors to be achievers, as achievers usually see problems as transitory while failures usually see the smallest challenge as everlasting. She said being courageous required no exceptional qualifications and no magic formula. "It is not what we do once in a while that counts, but our consistent actions. It is our determination and commitment to the unrelenting pursuit of our goals, commitment to excellence that would make us attain the success we seek." She said challenges such as education, crime, HIV-AIDS, health, regional development, unemployment, poverty and violence against women and children needed the urgent attention of the council. - Nampa |
