Nudo cheated kindergarten, owner claims

CHRISTOF MALETSKY

A YOUNG woman from Katutura was left fuming after the National Unity Democratic Organisation (Nudo) "bought" a mobile structure from her five months ago, only to return it because they thought it was too expensive.

Eneth Mate, owner of Katutura Central Kindergarten, said Nudo only returned the structures after her lawyers intervened and threatened to take the party to court.
Nudo took the mobile structure that Mate was using for her crèche in August last year after agreeing to pay N$12 000.
The party promised to pay the money the next day, but only gave her N$1 000 and asked for another two weeks to pay the remainder.
When they failed to settle the outstanding debt, Mate started negotiating with another interested buyer.
Nudo officials heard about the deal and approached Mate again with promises that the debt would be settled by October 15.
The Namibian has seen communication between Mate and Nudo’s director of elections, Theofelus Uahongora, stating that Nudo was committed to buying the structure and would pay the money by the middle of October.
When this did not happen, Mate called in the Police and the party paid a further N$4 000.
They promised to settle the rest by November 1.
"They have manifestos claiming that they want to build a better Namibia. But how can you build when you break down the future of children. Around 80 per cent of the learners here are from Nudo supporters’ homes," said Mate, who started the kindergarten nine years ago.
Nudo President Kuaima Riruako declined to comment, while another official, Arnold Tjihuiko, second on the party list for the National Assembly, said the issue was dealt with and there was nothing to write about.
Nudo sources said the leadership thought that the structures were not worth the N$12 000 initially agreed.
Mate said they intended to extend the kindergarten with the money from the sale. She added that the Katutura Central Kindergarten was losing potential clients because of the shortage of classrooms.
