Nujoma on media bias

PRESIDENT Sam Nujoma has urged the government-owned New Era newspaper to contribute to nation building by promoting a balanced view of the country’s socio-economic agenda.
Nujoma made the request as he inaugurated the new head office of the New Era Publications Corporation on Monday.

He said the media play an important role in nation building by promoting democratic values, as well as informing and educating the nation.
But he quickly pointed out that the media are also required to maintain high journalistic principles and report accurately on socio-economic conditions in order to make a positive contribution to public policy processes.
"However, if it is managed irresponsibly, the media can become a force of destruction and breakdown of social, economic and political foundations of the society by inciting the public or by spreading falsehoods," said Nujoma.
The President said it is a pity that some media institutions in Africa have joined hands with "imperialists" to destroy the development achievements in some countries.
"In this process, African countries are portrayed in a negative light and our success stories are overlooked. At the same time, African public institutions have been criticised as undemocratic, while the integrity of African leaders has been ridiculed," he stated.
He said it is disheartening to note that some media practitioners in Namibia have also joined the fray and are now promoting these negative ideologies, which despise African values and development initiatives.
"Of course, where it is due, criticism should be offered. As watchdogs, the media must point out where there are needs for improvement. But that must be done within the boundaries of reason and propriety," he stressed. – Nampa
