Kauandenge quits top Nudo post

CHRISTOF MALETSKY

EMOTIONS are running high in the National Unity Democratic Organisation after its former Secretary General Joseph Kauandenge quit as advisor to Nudo President Kuaima Riruako yesterday.

Kauandenge cited double standards and the alleged continuous marginalisation of young people as the main reasons.

He will remain an ordinary member.

He was the Secretary General of the party until he was suspended late last year because of differences with other leaders and was appointed as advisor to Riruako.

Kauandenge alleged to The Namibian yesterday that the party's leadership was applying double standards in dealing with its acting Secretary General Usiel Tjijenda, who was reportedly involved in an election ballot-burning case at Okahandja following last year's National Assembly elections.

A national bureau meeting is scheduled for tonight.

Initially sources said the meeting, postponed last week because of a memorial service of former Red Cross Secretary General Bertha Ngavirue on Thursday, was expected to grill Tjijenda about the ballot papers discovered at Okahandja.

Kauandenge said it looked like Tjijenda was getting special treatment.

"My case was done within seconds but they are keeping the Tjijenda case under wraps.

They always have excuses in dealing with the case," said Kauandenge, who moved out of the DTA with Riruako.

The youth leader claimed that the Nudo leadership had alienated the youth although they had been the first to rally behind Riruako.

"Latecomers have taken over.

Look at what is happening to the likes of Asser Mbai and Prof (Mburumba) Kerina.

Are we still in the Nudo party that we started?" he asked.

The ballot paper case, central to an opposition challenge to the National Assembly election results, threatens to derail Nudo's bid to have a stake in Government.

Tjijenda's alleged involvement in the burning of ballot papers is said to have affected negotiations with the ruling party on Nudo's aspirations to form 'a government of national unity'.

Riruako has refused to provide any details on the talks with Swapo.
