CoD youth slam President, Unam

CHRISTOF MALETSKY

THE Congress of Democrats' youth wing has criticised the University of Namibia for enrolling President Sam Nujoma, claiming the institution is making a mockery of itself.

The Secretary General of the Young Democrats, Natji Tjirera, charged in a press statement that Nujoma did not qualify to enrol at Unam because he did not work in the field of science before applying.

Nujoma registered last week for a Masters Degree in geology.

He did it through the Mature Age Entry Scheme and will pay his own study fees.

Tjirare said Unam had always made out that it was strict on its admission requirements, but had now decided to allow "a 75-year-old standard-four drop-out to do a masters degree".

In fact, the President has a junior certificate through the Trans Africa Correspondence College in South Africa.

"Is this the trend now, that everyone who wants to study at Unam will be allowed to study there whether they meet the necessary requirements or not? To add insult to injury, the student [President Nujoma] does not apply or get admitted for an undergraduate degree but a post-graduate degree.

One is forced to wonder whether the BSc degree was part of the pension package," Tjirera said.

He said it had become clear why Nujoma's retirement package included office space, computers, secretaries and personal assistants who will be paid by the taxpayer.

"What remains is the question whether the assistants will be doing the assignment for the President or not," he said.

Earlier, Unam's Director of Communication and Marketing, Edwin Tjiramba, said Nujoma's application was reviewed by a panel of academics and representatives of the Unam Council who interviewed him.

Tjiramba said Nujoma was not studying for recreational or job-hunting purposes but to encourage the Namibian youth by example.
