Man wrongly arrested for young Rachel's murder fears for his life

MAGGI BARNARD

A MAN from Swakopmund fears for his life after he was held in Police custody for two days as a suspect in the rape and murder case of six-year-old Rachel Hamatundu.

"I am very, very angry," Thomas Angula (27) told The Namibian.

"This incident has given me a very bad name. When I am on the street people accuse me of killing that little girl. I fear for my life. I am scared I will be attacked."

Angula says even his relatives are angry with him.

He had only been living at the Municipal flats on Brockerhoff Avenue, Tamariskia for a month when the incident took place.

He says he did not know Rachel by name.

On Wednesday, February 2, three Police officers knocked on his door around 11h30 and identified themselves.

"I was on leave at the time. They started searching my cupboards and looked at my shoes."

They took him to the Police station, saying "we need to talk".

"Many people saw me being taken away by the Police," Angula says.

At the Police station, he was asked whether he knew who killed the girl.

"I said no and they took my money, my wallet and locked me up. The only explanation given to me was that it was about the child. They never even took my fingerprints. I stayed Wednesday night, Thursday night and around 16h00 on Friday they called me."

He says he was told to take his wallet and money and go home.

"They told me they made a mistake and that another man was arrested. All the people in the location are now scared of me. They say I did it."

Angula, an employee at the Municipal Health Department for the past four years, says he desperately wants to clear his name.

"I am even prepared to get a lawyer."

The man charged with the murder, rape and abduction of Hamatundu, Willem Cornelius Louw (30), pleaded guilty to all three charges in the Swakopmund Magistrate's Court on Monday.
