Swimmers garner 37 gold medals

SWIMMERS from the Dolphins Swimming Club were in superior form when they collected 61 medals at the recently concluded Griekwas gala in Upington.

The Namibians competed against swimmers from Bloemfontein, Kimberly and the host town.

Among the 61 medals, 37 were gold, 16 silver and eight were bronze, with top performers being the sensational Quinton Delie who raked in nine medals.

He was followed by another exceptional performer, Nadia Sternagel, who pocketed eight gold medals and a silver.

Youngster Ilka Preschel also landed seven gold and a silver, while Jean-Paul Burger scored similarly.

Out of 13 clubs that competed at the event, Namibia came third overall despite the small number of swimmers compared to the other competitors.

Flamingo from Kimberly took the first spot with 2 884 points, followed by Upington with 1 483 and Namibia in third with 1 448.

Other Namibian swimmers who took medals were as follows: Vera Adrian (one gold, silver and bronze), Antoine Aggenbach (one gold and a bronze), Nadine Arlove ( two gold, two silver and two bronze), Adria Kruger (two bronze), Benita Preschel (one silver, two bronze), Andrew Schanknecht (two gold and eight silver).

Janis Stergiadis was the coach of the team, with Jaques and Erna Burger who were responsible for the all the arrangements for the successful participation of the swimmers.

The sponsors of the tour were NFIT and Steers Fast Foods.
