Kumble spins India to victory

NEW DELHI - India leg spinner Anil Kumble grabbed his eighth 10-wicket match haul to lead India to an emphatic 188-run victory over Sri Lanka in the second test yesterday.

Kumble took four for 85 to bowl out Sri Lanka for 247 in their second innings shortly after lunch on the fifth day, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Sri Lanka were reduced to 203 for seven at lunch after being set a world record 436-run fourth innings victory target.

They added another 40 runs before off spinner Harbhajan Singh provided the breakthrough by removing Mahela Jayawardene for a patient 67.

Jayawardene had shared a 68 run seventh-wicket partnership with Tillakaratne Dilshan (32) to frustrate Indian victory hopes.

Once Jayawardene was caught at short leg off bat and pad, however, the resistance ended and the Sri Lankan lost their last three wickets for four runs.

Kumble struck in the next over to have Chaminda Vaas caught at midwicket by Harbhajan to complete match figures of 10 for 157, the eighth time in 99 tests he has achieved the feat.

The 35-year-old was named the man of the match at the ground where he became only the second bowler in test history to take all 10 wickets in an innings, against Pakistan in 1999.

Sri Lanka, struggling on 123 for five overnight, dug in after Ajit Agarkar had trapped left-hander Jehan Mubarak lbw for three.

Jayawardene and Dilshan survived for 90 minutes before Dilshan threw his wicket away, bowled by Kumble after charging down the wicket.

Jayawardene hooked Agarkar to backward square leg for four and cut Harbhajan Singh past slip for two of his seven fours in an innings spanning nearly three-and-a-half hours.

The rain-marred first test in Chennai ended in a draw.

The final match begins in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
