Zone Six Gymnastics kicks off

THE spotlight is about to fall on gymnastics when the Zone Six competition swings into action today and tomorrow at the Walvis Bay Indoor Sports Complex.

Due to political unrest in Zimbabwe, Namibia is once again hosting this competition.

The event will kick off with a sports aerobic competition at 15h00 today, followed by the opening ceremony at 19h00.

The 2006 Zone Six Gymnastics competition will witness a gathering of over 200 gymnastics from five southern African countries.

Those participating will include South Africa with 85 entries, Namibia with 77 entrants, Lesotho with 13 participants and seven gymnasts from Botswana.

The visiting gymnasts started arriving from Tuesday and started a rigid training schedule.

The competition timetable has been divided to accommodate the various codes, which include trampoline, mini-trampoline, rhythmic, artistic, sports aerobics and tumbling.

Participants will be competing in teams for their countries, as well as individually in the pre-junior, junior and senior categories.

The various countries are showcasing their top talents to take home the coveted medal and rewards.

The president of the Namibia Gymnastics Federation, Valereis Geldenhuys, is also presenting a gala evening on Saturday night, where awards will be handed out for various gymnastic achievements.

Swabou Insurance sponsored the event to the tune of N$50 000.
