Thursday, December 22, 2005 - Web posted at 7:20:31 GMT HIGCSE results 'slightly better' * CHRISTOF MALETSKYTHIS year's Higher International General Certificate of Secondary Education (HIGCSE) students performed "slightly better" with 94,7 per cent of candidates obtaining grade four or better, the Directorate of National Examinations announced yesterday. |
|
This meant that 5,6 per cent of the total entry was ungraded. "This performance is slightly better than last year," the Directorate said. Last year, 93,4 per cent of candidates obtained grade four or better and 6,65 per cent were ungraded. A grade three or better is required in a HIGCSE subject for entry to the University of Namibia and universities in South Africa. "On that basis 75,8 per cent of the subject entries have met this minimum requirement. Fewer than the above-mentioned 75,8 per cent candidates may qualify for admission to South African universities because not all have entered for the required minimum of four HIGCSE subjects," the Directorate said. As in previous years, a relatively small percentage (11,5 per cent) of the total number of Grade 12 candidates wrote the HIGCSE exam this year. HIGCSE is intended for candidates who obtained high grades in the Junior Secondary Certificate examination at the end of Grade 10. The IGCSE results will be released in the week of January 23 to 27. |
