Walvis official in court over alleged fraud

A FORMER human resources assistant in the Municipality at Walvis Bay, Neville Strauss, appeared in the Walvis Bay Magistrate's Court on Thursday on a charge of fraud or alternatively theft.

Strauss allegedly abused the pension benefit through which municipal employees can borrow money for housing purposes.

He is alleged to have taken out loans on behalf of other employees without their knowledge.

Some employees apparently became aware of the discrepancy when they noticed deductions from their salaries.

According to Prosecutor Seredine Eiman, the amount involved is N$348 000.

Strauss resigned from the Municipality in October.

He was arrested in Windhoek last Tuesday and was transferred to Walvis Bay.

Magistrate Peter Nangula granted him bail of N$50 000 until his next appearance on February 21 2006.
