Suspect in court over Swiss tourist robbery

* WERNER MENGES

A 31-year-old resident of Windhoek appeared in the Windhoek Magistrate's Court yesterday on a charge that he had robbed two Swiss tourists in the capital on last Friday.

The Police reported on Sunday that the first armed robbery in the city centre since the Windhoek City Police hit the streets earlier this year had taken place two days earlier.

By Tuesday, the Police arrested a suspect.

He is Awala Angula (31), and he appeared before Magistrate Desmond Beukes yesterday on a charge of robbery with aggravating circumstances.

The daylight robbery took place on Promenaden Road - not exactly in the Windhoek city centre, but nevertheless within walking distance from it - at about 15h00 on Friday, when two men held the two Swiss visitors at gunpoint and stole a camera, handbag and reading glasses.

The Police valued the items at about N$11 000.

Public Prosecutor Karin Esterhuizen asked the Magistrate to postpone Angula's case to May 9 next year for further investigation.

Magistrate Beukes ordered that Angula would remain in custody in the meantime.

Angula also appeared before the Magistrate on two other charges yesterday.

In the one case, he is facing a charge of theft out of a motor vehicle that dates from early July last year.

In the other case, a charge of robbery with aggravating circumstances, dating from April last year, is pending against him.

Both those cases were also postponed to May 9 2006.
