He said that the Ministry had decided against rehabilitating existing boreholes because it was cheaper to drill new ones.

It costs about N$150 000 to drill a borehole, while rehabilitating an existing one could cost up to N$600 000, he said.

Koruhama said he was aware that new water points and boreholes were urgently needed in the south of the region and in the Khorixas district, but could not say when anything would be done about that situation.

Regional councillors have said that the borehole at the Khai-tumus cattle post in the Kamanjab area collapsed almost a year ago.

Since then, people have had to get water from Dorsland, about seven kilometres away.

"Khai-tumus would probably be on the list of the places that have to get new boreholes but I do not know when it is going to be drilled," Koruhama said.
