Monday, December 19, 2005 - Web posted at 7:44:09 GMT Village of Tses celebrates 'a sparkling year' * DENVER ISAACSTHE village of Tses, situated 80 kilometres north of Keetmanshoop, says it is celebrating an extraordinarily good year this Christmas, with a number of the village council's projects coming to conclusion, and others starting to gain steam. |
|
Last month saw the inauguration of the village's central park, complete with stalls for small businesses, that was built by a local youth group with the support of the council. "I can really say that this has been the most successful year for the council," council Chairperson Petrus Witbooi told The Namibian. "I can only say that its because we have good communication with the community, and that we don't allow political differences to interfere with the running of things." The town has three Swapo councillors, one from the DTA, and one from the Congress of Democrats (COD). Other successes recorded include the upgrading of local roads at Tses - a five-year maintenance plan that is set to cost around N$30 000, and which has been approved by the Road Fund Authority; and a Build Together Programme which is near completion. "The village of Tses will be the most decorated town during the festive season," the council proclaimed in a report on their activities. This, they say, is because of the fact that private contractors have been busy, since October, to install electricity in every suburb in the village. Streetlights are also being erected at the entrance of the main B1 road, at schools, at the TransNamib railway station, and at the Build Together houses. The village also has around 150 children enrolled in an orphan care programme, and the council has established an AIDS Co-ordinating Committee, with a drop-in centre to be opened in the near future. "One thing we're worried about," Witbooi told The Namibian, "is the establishment of social housing for people in the suburbs." Under the 'social housing' programme, Government will fund housing for those identified by the local authority as being in need of help with housing. The affected households will only pay for their water consumption and pre-paid electricity. |
