SA supports R20b train project

CAPE TOWN - South Africa's cabinet supported the controversial R20-billion high-speed train, a senior government official said yesterday, brushing aside opposition from politicians.

"The national government wishes to emphasise that it supports this initiative," government chief spokesman Joel Netshitenzhe told reporters after a cabinet briefing.

He said negotiations would continue to ensure that construction of the project starts within the timeframe that had already been decided upon.

The parties involved have agreed to start construction in 2006.
