Justice will be done: Pohamba

OPUWO - President Hifikepunye Pohamba has declared that Government will leave no stone unturned until all forms of crime are dealt with and the criminals who steal, murder and rape defenceless women and children face the full force of the law.

"In this regard, our judiciary is playing and will continue to play a critical role in maintaining peace and enforcing the rule of law in our country," Pohamba said on Thursday.

He was speaking at the inauguration of the N$6,3 million Opuwo Magistrate's Court.

He said the Government was committed to fighting crime and looked to the courts to dispense swift justice.

"As the saying goes, justice should not only be done, it should be seen to be done," he said, adding that courts should deal with cases promptly so that public confidence in the judiciary can be reinforced.

Pohamba said the construction of the Opuwo Magistrate's Court was in line with the Government's policies and initiatives to bring public services closer to the people.

"This includes the establishment of appropriate facilities such as this Magistrate's court," he said.

"We view this as extremely important, given our firm commitment to the rule of law and democracy in our country."

He said promotion of effective and efficient administration of justice remained one of Government's priorities.

It was for this reason that the Government had undertaken a comprehensive and sustained programme of expansion of court facilities to different parts of the country, especially in areas where magistrate's courts had never existed in the past.

Several Magistrate's Courts have been built and upgraded across the country, and a High Court is to be built in Oshakati.
