The protest marked the launch of a Herero campaign against Germany's bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

"Germany's continued arrogance and refusal to accede to the legitimate and well-founded demands of the Herero people in Namibia and the Diaspora has led us to conclude that Germany must be completely disqualified from permanent membership of the UNSC," the petition read.

They said the continued refusal by the Federal Republic of Germany to recognise the Herero genocide and to pay compensation to the Herero had driven them to oppose any plans by Germany to be given a permanent seat on the UNSC.

This weekend sees the annual traditional Herero gathering at Okahandja, with the highlight on Sunday when people will march to the cemetery to pay their respects to their ancestors and late chiefs.
