Technical director's post still vacant

CORY IHUHUA

THE technical director for Namibian football will only be appointed at the end of May because the NFA executive committee has not been able to reach consensus on the appointment.

Namibia Football Association (NFA) spokesperson Beau Kauta informed The Namibian sport that the position, which has been vacant for almost two years, will only be filled after an executive meeting at the end of May.

The executive committee has so far postponed the appointment of the technical director three times.

First, an executive meeting at Soccer House on March 26 did not yield any results as the members of the executive committee felt that the item was not relevant and did not feature on their agenda.

After that meeting, NFA secretary general Alpheus Gaweseb said the executive members decided to discuss the matter over the Easter weekend at The Namibian Newspaper Cup in Mariental.

But that meeting did not deliver any results either, because too few NFA executive members turned up to form a quorum.

Gaweseb said the decision would be postponed until May, but he gave no specific date.

Gaweseb, as secretary general of the football association, has the responsibility of calling an executive meeting, but he has not done so since Easter.

The Namibian sport has reliably learnt that the repeated postponements of the appointment were due to conflicting opinions among the executive members.

Namibian under-23 coach Seth Boois and former Brave Warriors goalkeeper Ronnie Kanalelo were interviewed for the position.

The members are apparently divided over who should get the job, as some feel that Boois had a go on national level before, while some want to give Kanalelo a chance.

A Fifa delegation that came to Namibia last Sunday for a workshop to assist with the strategic plan of the NFA and appointment of the technical director, was surprised to find out that the vacancy had not yet been filled.

In terms of new Fifa regulations, each country should have a technical director who is responsible for the development of football, planning and implementation, recommendation of coaches, grassroots football, coaching courses, establishing a technical directorate of the NFA, monitoring all national teams and maintaining an up-to-date database of players and coaches.

Kauta said Fifa coaching instructor Ben Koufi, who was in Namibia for the workshop, met with NFA president Petrus Damaseb on Monday night and resolved that the position must be filled by the end of May.
